Why Install an FRL Unit on Your Pneumatic Motors?

The characteristics of the air produced by a compression system often don’t match the requirements of the pneumatic components you intend to use. Installing an FRL unit — that is, a Filtration, Regulation, and Lubrication system — is a key step to ensure the optimal and safe operation of your pneumatic motors, especially in demanding environments.

What Is an FRL Unit and What Is It Used For?

  • An FRL unit is a compressed air treatment device installed upstream of your equipment. It includes three essential components:

    • A filter to remove solid and liquid impurities from the air

    • A pressure regulator to ensure a stable air supply

    • A lubricator to inject an oil mist and protect internal components

Its role is to provide clean, dry, consistently pressurized, and lightly lubricated air — ideal for the performance and longevity of pneumatic actuators and air motors.

Filter the Air to Protect Your Equipment

Air from a compressor typically contains dust, water, oil, or other contaminants. These can enter the pneumatic circuit and lead to:

🔷 Premature wear of moving parts
🔷 Malfunctions due to clogging
🔷 Reduced motor performance

An effective filtration system, with a 5 µm cartridge and semi-automatic drain, eliminates these pollutants.

Result: your equipment runs better, longer, and requires less maintenance.

Regulate Pressure for Consistent Performance

Compressors don’t always deliver a stable pressure. Fluctuations can affect the speed and torque of pneumatic motors, which are highly sensitive to such variations.

The FRL unit includes an automatic pressure-relief regulator to keep output pressure stable. This is crucial for:

🔷 Consistent operating speed
🔷 Controlled air consumption
🔷 Protection against overpressure

Some units, like those from MODEC, also include a locking mechanism to prevent unintended adjustments during use. Always ensure the motor operates at the desired pressure without exceeding its maximum rated pressure.

Lubricate to Prevent Wear and Corrosion

Compressed air alone — even dry — is not always enough to lubricate internal components properly. Injecting a controlled oil mist into the airflow helps:

🔷 Reduce friction between moving parts
🔷 Protect against corrosion during downtime
🔷 Extend the service life of pneumatic motors

This function is especially useful in dusty, humid environments or for mobile equipment exposed to changing conditions.

In Summary: Why Install an FRL Unit?

An FRL unit is far more than an accessory — it’s an essential part of your pneumatic setup. It helps:

✅ Prevent premature wear and failures
✅ Maintain stable and controlled pressure
✅ Lower maintenance and air consumption costs
✅ Ensure safe operation, including in ATEX zones or harsh conditions

Choose your FRL according to your network specs (flow rate, pressure, environment), and protect it adequately when used in the field.

Modec’s FRL unit can be delivered with a steel base for enhanced protection, especially for mobile applications. It also includes feet for improved stability.
